How can I tell if my silverware isn't silver plated?

I have a lot of silverware and I'm wondering if there is a test to see if the items are silver " all the way through", not just silver plated?

on the back side of the spoons and forks there should be a mark.if not try to search the words(company) that are there. it should tell you. other than that i dont know, short of trying/asking a jeweler.
