Has anyone heard of a GPRS / GPS chip that can be implanted in a dog for tracking purposes!?

Dog theft is such a problem a chip with GPRS / GPS facility would be an amazing thing to have. We already implant our dogs with the name chips but surely this is the next step? I know you can attach them to collars but theives can take these off. One under the skin would be better. We'll know where our dog is all the time!

There is a company which, once upon a time, developed a GPS system which could in fact be slipped under the skin of animals as the microchip currently are. These devices would allow you to track your dog (or any animal) to within 1 yard of their location - much like the lo-jack systems in vehicles. This magnificent technology had so many possibilities - testing was being done to develop versions that could be used for children and those with Alzheimers, etc. How terrific to have a way to keep those individuals safe and to get your pet back immediately when they've wandered off, right? Well, apparently not right! The ACLU-type idiots and those who are freaked about "personal rights" raised a stink about how it could be used in terrible ways (for instance, wouldn't it be awful if we always knew the whereabouts of a child molester? heavens, we wouldn't want to invade their privacy!) Thus, like many sad stories, this company knew better than to risk it's livelihood on the US justice system when they were sued for heaven-knows-what ....... They currently make only the scannable microchips. But the answer to your question is simply YES! the technology does exist, and has for many, many years, but without people taking a stand, it will never see the light of day. Perhaps if the parents, friends, etc., of all the missing CHILDREN in the US got together, we may someday see this great technology available to both people and pets .....
