Is it disrespectful to wear an image of the American flag on clothing?

I was told by people in the military that you are not supposed to display the american flag on your clothing. If this is true why is to sold like this all the time?

I think it is . . . however, if the profits from the sale of such items go to benefit the military I'm o.k. with it.
